U.S./Canadian Sales
The North American Free Trade Agreement essentially removed customs charges on products traded among the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, with some exceptions. But this agreement applies ONLY to products manufactured within these countries. Imported items re-exported are still subject to tariffs. And in both cases, you need the services of a customs broker. Most shippers arrange for a broker for you. But you do get charged for that service.
So those Austrian skis, Italian boots, French bindings, and Spanish accessories are going to cost you extra when the move over the border. So careful - those $150 skis could quickly cost you $200. Ask your supplier before you buy.
We have heard that sales to/from Canada of less that $500 for your personal use are exempt. We have been unable to confirm this. We therefore recommend you purchase your ski equipment within your own country.
